Manila: Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced his full support for the Bureau of Customs' (BOC) investigation concerning luxury vehicles owned by the Discaya family.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lopez has directed the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to collaborate with the BOC by providing access to all relevant registration records, importation documents, and verification processes for the luxury cars in question. Lopez emphasized the importance of assisting the BOC in determining if the vehicles were registered through proper channels, pledging to provide any necessary support.
This action aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive for a comprehensive government approach to combat the illegal importation of luxury vehicles and address issues related to unpaid government fees. Lopez reiterated that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has a zero-tolerance stance on unregistered luxury vehicles and is committed to prosecuting those who bypass or violate LTO registration procedures.
Previously, LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II stated that all 30 vehicles owned by the Discaya couple had passed the documentary check, indicating that all necessary documents were on file. However, a thorough investigation is ongoing to verify the authenticity of the electronically transmitted registration documents for the Discaya family's luxury vehicles.
In addition to the Discaya family, Mendoza mentioned that the LTO would also probe the registration of vehicles owned by other individuals involved in the Senate and House of Representatives' investigation into alleged ghost flood control projects.
