Antique: The portion of the national highway in Barangay Igbarawan in the municipality of Patnongon is now passable to commuters bound for the northern part of Antique and Aklan provinces. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Antique Engineering District Information Officer Primrose Zamora confirmed in an interview that their team successfully cleared the mudflow along the road section in Barangay Igbarawan as of 1:15 p.m. Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the swift response was facilitated by a standby team equipped with necessary machinery, ensuring the road section was promptly cleared. Zamora noted that all other roads in the province remain accessible to traffic. The mudflow incident was attributed to rainwater saturation, which softened the soil following heavy rains induced by the southwest monsoon, further intensified by Severe Tropical Storm Opong, internationally known as Bualoi.
Additionally, the Patnongon Municipal Police stepped in to assist commuters stranded due to the inclement weather. They provided free rides to residents and commuters unable to secure transportation amidst the heavy rainfall. Antique Provincial Police Office (APPO) Information Officer Police Capt. Lynnie de los Santos stated, "Residents of Patnongon just flagged down the patrol vehicles for them to take a ride."
In response to the potential needs of affected families, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has prepared 18,185 family food packs for distribution to local government units (LGUs) upon request. Darlene Abagat, Antique Social Welfare and Development Team Leader, elaborated that LGUs need to request the food packs based on their Disaster Response Management Information Center (DROMIC) report.
Furthermore, the Antique Provincial Government, through its Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, has also arranged 2,500 family food packs to support families impacted by Severe Tropical Storm Opong.
