Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways - South Manila District Engineering Office (DPWH-SMDEO) has recently started the construction of a drainage system to minimize flooding at the Baseco Compound in Port Area, Manila.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DPWH-National Capital Region (NCR) reported in a social media post on Friday that the PHP39 million project is now 15 percent complete, with the remaining works scheduled to continue until December 2025. The post highlighted that the 560-linear meter project is expected to significantly reduce flooding issues in the area once completed.
The DPWH emphasized that aside from safeguarding public health by preventing illnesses and infections caused by accumulated floodwater, the project will also enhance roadway conditions, ensuring safer travels for motorists. The department implemented the project due to the lack of a drainage system in the area, which is vital in addressing the issue of flooding in Baseco Compound.
The department, headed by Secretary Manuel Bonoan, is committed to providing high-quality public infrastructure facilities responsive to community needs as part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s "Build Better More" program.
Meanwhile, the DPWH - Quezon City 1st District Engineering Office will partially close the southbound portion of the Mindanao Avenue Underpass from 10 p.m. on July 4 to 5 a.m. on July 7, and the northbound portions from 10 p.m. on July 11 to 10 p.m. on July 14 for concrete reblocking works. The reblocking works aim to repair the dilapidated pavement road section of the underpass, ensuring a smoother and safer roadway for road users.
While the affected lanes are partially closed, other lanes remain open and passable to all types of vehicles. Motorists are advised of traffic slowdowns during the repair period and are encouraged to take alternate routes.
