DSWD Guarantees Uninterrupted Relief for Families Affected by Crising and Habagat

Manila: Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Tuesday assured continuous relief support for families affected by the combined effects of Severe Tropical Storm Crising (international name Wipha) and the enhanced southwest monsoon or 'habagat.'

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian highlighted the instructions from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure that no affected family goes hungry. During the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) virtual press briefing, Gatchalian emphasized the ongoing support through food distribution to the affected families.

Data from the DSWD revealed that 490,418 families have been impacted by these weather disturbances, with 14,191 families currently taking refuge in 500 evacuation centers across the nation. Gatchalian stated that 92,590 family food packs (FFPs) have already been distributed to local government units (LGUs) that sought additional resources. Plans are underway to release approximately 40,000 more FFPs for other LGUs' pending requests.

The DSWD has strategically prepositioned over 3 million boxes of FFPs in anticipation of Crising, with ongoing production at the main disaster hubs, including the National Resource Operations Center (NROC) and the Visayas Disaster Response Center (VDRC) in Mandaue City, Cebu. In addition to FFPs, 337,494 non-food items, such as sleeping kits and hygiene packs, are stored in 935 warehouses nationwide.

Gatchalian reiterated the agency's commitment to continual repacking efforts and readiness to provide additional assistance to LGUs as needed. He also mentioned new measures introduced under the Marcos administration, such as ready-to-eat food (RTEF) boxes and water filtration kits, to enhance the relief efforts.

The DSWD is actively coordinating with LGUs to ensure efficient distribution of support. Gatchalian expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts with LGUs to expedite the delivery of relief packs to those in need, emphasizing the importance of aiding every affected individual during these challenging times.

He urged the public to stay vigilant and follow local advisories for their safety. Gatchalian reassured citizens of the national government's dedication to addressing their needs, reiterating President Marcos's directive that no affected family should experience hunger, as every life is valuable.
