Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday placed its response teams, including those in its field offices, on full alert to provide immediate assistance to families and individuals who may be affected by scattered rains brought by a low pressure area (LPA) and the easterlies.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Disaster Response Management Group head Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao stated that Secretary Rex Gatchalian has directed field office regional directors to prepare for the potential impacts of the impending bad weather. Preparations include deploying mobile command centers, mobile kitchens, and the "Angels in Red Vests," who are tasked with delivering aid during calamities.
As of Wednesday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) located the LPA over the coastal waters of Rapu-Rapu, Albay. PAGASA indicated that the weather disturbance could bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to Metro Manila, Central Luzon, the Bicol Region, Calabarzon, and parts of Mimaropa.
Dumlao, who also serves as the DSWD spokesperson, emphasized the importance of public caution as the ongoing rains could lead to flash floods and landslides. She advised residents to stay informed through their local government units regarding updates and information on where to seek assistance if affected by the weather.
The DSWD assured the public that family food packs and other relief items have been strategically prepositioned in hubs, warehouses, and last-mile facilities across the nation. Dumlao highlighted the proactive and predictive approach adopted by the department, as mentioned by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during his recent State of the Nation Address. The DSWD ensures continuous replenishment of relief goods, maintaining stock levels even in the absence of immediate calamities.
Based on the DSWD's latest Disaster Response Operations Monitoring, Information, and Communication report, more than 4.8 million boxes of family food packs are ready for distribution to local government units potentially affected by the LPA. The Luzon Disaster Resource Center in Pasay City currently holds 718,024 family food packs, with Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the Bicol Region also maintaining substantial reserves.
