DTI Exec Assures Availability of Basic Commodities Amid Calamity

Manila: An official of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Friday assured the public of an adequate supply of basic commodities amid the state of calamity declared in more than 40 municipalities nationwide.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lawyer Regino Mallari, officer in charge of DTI's Fair Trade Group, stated that DTI's regional offices are in constant coordination with manufacturers, suppliers, and dealers of basic goods even before a calamity hits. "Sa latest report po natin, as far as DTI is concerned, sa mga basic goods natin, three weeks to one month sufficient po ang ating supply (Based on our latest report, we have sufficient supply of basic goods for three weeks up to one month)," he said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon program.

More than 40 municipalities in Luzon and the Visayas have declared a state of calamity due to heavy rains and flooding caused by a series of storms and the enhanced southwest monsoon since last week.

Mallari mentioned that a 60-day price freeze on basic necessities and prime commodities in areas declared under a state of calamity is mandated under Republic Act 7581 or the Price Act. Included in the price freeze are canned goods, instant noodles, processed milk, and coffee, he said.

Violations may be reported through DTI's hotline, 1384, or through an e-mail sent to [email protected]. Mallari confirmed that they have not received any report of violations or supply disruption.
