Manila: Senator Erwin Tulfo, the newly elected chairperson of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, expressed confidence that his panel would adopt a firm position against online gambling as he prepares to convene a hearing to examine its growing social impact.

According to Philippines News Agency, Tulfo stated in a press briefing that he is optimistic about convincing the committee to take a stand against online gambling, even advocating for a total ban on the activity. He announced plans to conduct a hearing with all relevant stakeholders, including the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), the Department of Finance, and other representatives from various sectors, such as youth, parents, school, and religious organizations.

Tulfo emphasized the importance of listening to all parties involved, saying, "We want to listen. Let me hear you. Then from there we can talk." He highlighted the need for stronger safeguards against online gambling, expressing concerns over the current systems that allow easy access, even for minors.

Tulfo criticized the lack of control, pointing out issues such as gambling options appearing on widely used financial apps like GCash. He illustrated the potential risks by explaining how children could be exposed to gambling through these platforms.

Tulfo also condemned a viral incident involving a lawmaker watching e-sabong (online cockfighting) during the opening session of the 20th Congress, describing it as "very frustrating" and "a disgrace." He underscored the responsibility of lawmakers to focus on their duties, regardless of personal disinterest in proceedings.

The senator warned about the normalization of online gambling across various sectors, reiterating the potential consequences if regulation remains ineffective. Tulfo affirmed the committee's willingness to consider a total ban should other measures fail to address the issue effectively.
