Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero has ordered a review of the Senate's random drug testing policy to ensure stricter implementation. This directive comes in the wake of reports alleging marijuana use within the Senate's premises.
According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero confirmed in a letter to Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III that the Senate had conducted its most recent mandatory random drug test (MRDT) for officials and employees on March 20. Preparations are already in progress for another round of testing. Escudero assured that the forthcoming tests would be comprehensive and compliant with the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Escudero also noted that updated guidelines are being developed in consultation with the Department of Health and accredited laboratories. These guidelines aim to ensure the legal robustness and effective implementation of the drug testing policy. He referenced Senate Policy Order No. 2018-002, instituted during Sotto's tenure as Senate President, which established the practice of random drug testing.
The policy had been consistently observed until 2020, and Escudero emphasized the need to revisit it for more stringent enforcement. Currently, the Senate is awaiting a complete roster of employees whose names will be included in the upcoming MRDT.
Sotto had previously called for the immediate conduct of drug testing for senators and staff following reports of alleged drug use on the Senate's fifth floor.
