Manila: The European Union (EU) Delegation in Manila announced the provision of 750,000 euros, approximately PHP50 million, in humanitarian aid for victims of the September 30 magnitude 6.9 earthquake that impacted Cebu province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the EU Delegation stated that the funds will be utilized to deliver emergency relief, including shelter, water, and sanitation, to those most affected, especially displaced individuals who have lost their homes. Out of the total allocation, 250,000 euros, or around PHP17 million, will be directed to the Philippine Red Cross to aid in providing cash assistance, tents, household items, and healthcare services to those in need.
The financial support is part of the EU's contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) managed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Additionally, the EU is evaluating the situation in Davao Oriental for potential assistance following significant earthquakes that occurred within a single day in the province.
A magnitude 7.4 offshore earthquake struck Mindanao province on Friday morning, followed by a magnitude 6.9 aftershock in the evening, leading to another tsunami warning. 'The European Union expresses its solidarity with the people affected by the earthquake that happened this morning in Davao Oriental and nearby areas,' the EU Delegation mentioned in their statement.
Furthermore, the EU is actively monitoring the situation to determine if further assistance for affected families and communities is necessary.
