EU on US Tariffs: Ready to Work Toward a Deal, but Protect Interests

Brussels: Regarding the announcement of United States tariffs at 30 percent as of Aug. 1, the European Union "remains ready to continue working towards an agreement" with the US "by August 1," but will take "all necessary measures to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures, if necessary." This was stated in a statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

According to Philippines News Agency, von der Leyen emphasized the potential disruption that the proposed 30 percent tariffs on EU exports could cause to key transatlantic supply chains. She noted that such disruptions would negatively affect businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic. She highlighted the EU's commitment to fair trade practices and its openness as a trading partner.

The European Union has consistently aimed to prioritize a negotiated solution with the United States, showcasing its dedication to dialogue and stability within the transatlantic partnership. Von der Leyen reiterated the EU's readiness to work towards a mutually beneficial agreement by the set deadline.

While the EU remains open to negotiations, von der Leyen warned that the EU would take all necessary actions to protect its interests, including the possibility of implementing proportionate countermeasures if required. Meanwhile, the EU continues to strengthen its global partnerships, adhering to the principles of rules-based international trade.
