Manila: Mikaela Joy de Guzman and Jewel Angelo Albo emerged as champions in the singles division of the 2025 Philippine National Badminton Open held Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila. De Guzman, representing Ateneo de Manila University, clinched her third consecutive women's singles title with a straight-sets victory over Christel Rei Fuentispina, 21-13, 21-18. "I'm very happy with my performance this year. The only challenge I had was the pressure of defending my title," said de Guzman, who received the gold medal from Philippine Sports Commission chairperson Patrick Gregorio during the awarding ceremony.
According to Philippines News Agency, in the men's singles final, University of the Philippines standout Albo successfully defended his title with a 21-17, 21-17 win against Clarence Villaflor, marking his second consecutive victory over the same opponent in the finals. De Guzman and Albo took home PHP100,000 in prize money. The first and second runners-up were awarded PHP50,000 and PHP15,000, respectively.
Philippine Badminton Association (PBAD) secretary-general Carla Lizardo-Sulit, head of development Melvin Nubla, and Jude Turcuato, PLDT and Smart head of sports, awarded the medals and mock checks representing the prizes to the other podium finishers. In the women's doubles category, defending champions Airah Mae Albo and Lea Inlayo bounced back from a first-set loss to prevail over Andrea Hernandez and Mary Destiny Untal, 19-21, 21-15, 21-16. Albo and Inlayo shared the PHP120,000 top prize while Hernandez and Untal settled for PHP60,000. The third placers received PHP30,000.
In the men's division, Julius Villabrile and Solomon Padiz Jr. improved their runner-up performance from last year, defeating Christian Bernardo and Alvin Morada, 29-27, 21-17, to win the title and the champion's purse. The Philippine Open, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour Super?1000 event, is one of PBAD's tournaments to select members of the national team.
