Manila: The head of the Archdiocese of Manila is calling on the faithful to do charity works and help those in need before the start of the Lenten Season. Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula emphasized the importance of compassion as a core element of the Catholic Church's teachings.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cardinal Advincula highlighted the Lenten season as a time to renew and deepen spiritual lives while addressing the pressing needs of the community. "As we renew and deepen our spiritual lives, the pressing needs of our time urge us to embody compassion the highest expression of Christ's love," he stated in a public announcement.

The Archbishop urged the faithful to extend compassion to the sick, homeless, and poor by reaching out with both open hearts and hands. In line with this, the Archdiocese has planned a second collection during all Sundays of Lent-specifically on February 22, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2026-as part of the Alay Kapwa program. The entire collection will be directed to Caritas Manila, an organization dedicated to social services and development.

"Through our collective efforts, may we bring healing, shelter, and sustenance to those most in need, fulfilling our call to be true Pilgrims of Hope," Cardinal Advincula added.

Roman Catholics traditionally observe the annual 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving from February 18, Ash Wednesday, until April 5, Easter Sunday.
