Francisco Weakens into Severe Tropical Storm, PAGASA Reports

Manila: Tropical cyclone Francisco, also known as Mekkhala, has weakened into a severe tropical storm, the weather bureau announced on Thursday. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Francisco is currently exhibiting maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 125 kilometers per hour. According to Philippines News Agency, Francisco was positioned 415 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, as of 4 a.m., and is moving in a north-northeast direction at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Despite the weakening, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect for Batanes. The periphery of Francisco, combined with the influence of the southwest monsoon, known locally as the habagat, is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts across Panay Island, Negros Occidental, Northern Samar, and most parts of Luzon. Additionally, the habagat is anticipated to cause heavy rainfall in the provinces of Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. Mariners in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution, as rough seas are likely across the northern and eastern seaboards of Batanes. PAGASA has specifically warned small seacraft and all types of motorbancas to refrain from venturing into the sea due to the hazardous conditions. The weather bureau further indicated that Francisco is projected to continue weakening and may be downgraded to a tropical storm by Friday.
