Manila: Measures to aid in faster power line repairs and ensure sturdier posts and lines are now being studied, including the possibility of designing a system for underground cabling in storm-prone areas by 2026. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, in a briefing Monday, said power has been back in most of the areas in Luzon and the Visayas that were affected by the recent strong typhoons, except for several areas in Catanduanes, which are expected to have full restoration by Dec. 22, and those in mountainous and far-flung areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garin emphasized the importance of constructing stronger energy infrastructure, hoping to withstand winds up to 300 kph, to avoid repeated restoration efforts following future storms. She expressed the ambition to begin implementing underground cabling in one or two typhoon-prone cities by next year.

Garin highlighted the extensive repair work needed in areas severely impacted by typhoons. Meanwhile, an exhibit at the Department of Energy (DOE) was opened on Monday, showcasing models of various power generation facilities using different technologies.

Garin also stressed the importance of public awareness regarding energy conservation, urging people to be mindful of energy use to enhance government efforts towards energy efficiency. "Let's learn how to conserve energy and let's learn how to be more efficient in our utilization of energy," she said.
