Globe Pilots 50 Gbps Broadband Network for Home, Business Users

Makati City: Telecommunications firm Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) has completed pilot testing for its 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology, enabling data transmission of up to 50 Gigabits per second (Gbps). In a statement Monday, Globe said the "next-gen" 50 GPON technology has set a new benchmark in broadband connectivity, delivering multi-gigabit speeds to customers.

According to Philippines News Agency, by surpassing the capabilities of the current 10 GPON technology, 50 GPON promises improved efficiency, lower latency, and the capacity to address the diverse needs of both residential and business customers. The pilot was held at the Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City and included comprehensive testing for throughput, end-to-end latency, and jitter.

The pilot also demonstrated high-bandwidth practical applications such as 8K streaming, cloud gaming, augmented and virtual reality, fiber-to-the-room, and high-definition video conferencing. James Lim, Globe vice president for broadband service planning and engineering, said the 50 GPON technology is a key component in the company's 'future forward' approach to broadband connectivity.

Lim noted that with this milestone, Globe is taking a giant step towards ensuring their network is ready to support the evolving needs of their customers, both now and in the years to come. The 50 GPON technology is expected to be utilized in latency and bandwidth-heavy use cases such as real-time cloud gaming, 8k video streaming, and smart home solutions.

Additionally, the technology also unlocks opportunities for smart cities, telemedicine, advanced manufacturing, e-learning, and secure enterprise connectivity, Lim added.
