Manila: The government is gearing up to assist the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector in mitigating the potential effects of the proposed 'Keep Call Centers in America Act,' which seeks to safeguard US jobs by eliminating federal grants to companies that operate call centers outside the United States.
According to Philippines News Agency, the BPO industry is a significant contributor to the Philippine economy, employing approximately 1.4 million people in 2024 and generating revenues of around USD38 billion. Notably, about 70 percent of the BPO sector's clients are based in the United States. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cristina Roque stated that while there have been no formal discussions with the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) yet, there is a willingness to explore potential measures to support the sector.
Roque emphasized the need for diversification, suggesting that the industry should not solely focus on the US market. She assured that the DTI would continue to support IT-BPO businesses and IBPAP in any way necessary, as they have done in the past.
Despite the looming uncertainties, Fusion CX, an India-headquartered company, remains optimistic about its operations in the Philippines. The company has expanded its presence in Metro Manila, recently opening an office in Mandaluyong City, making the Philippines its second-largest site for global operations.
Fusion CX co-founder, chair, managing director, and CEO Pankaj Dhanuka highlighted the strength of their domestic operations, attributing it to the exceptional talent pool, government support, and the industry's resilience and innovation. Dhanuka noted that the Philippine government's policies, tax incentives, and creation of economic zones have fostered a business-friendly environment conducive to foreign investment and industry growth.
