Manila: Assistance for Kean Kaisser Talingdan, the 16-year-old Filipino injured in a fire at a Switzerland ski resort on New Year's Day, continues, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) assures.

According to Philippines News Agency, the fire razed a bar in Crans-Montana filled with New Year's Day revelers, killing at least 40 and injuring more than 100. Upon receiving an assistance request, the Philippine Embassy in Berne coordinated with Swiss authorities and maintained communication with his mother.

The Embassy worked closely with the Philippine Consulate General in Milan to ensure continuity of consular assistance after Mr. Talingdan's medical transfer to Italy, where he is currently receiving treatment. Throughout this period, the DFA and concerned Foreign Service Posts provided assistance while respecting the family's request for privacy and adhering to hospital protocols.

The DFA is currently facilitating medical assistance from the Assistance-to-Nationals Fund to help address the minor's needs. The DFA remains ready to extend further assistance as warranted.

Initial assessments suggest that sparklers on champagne bottles that hit the ceiling likely caused the fire.
