Antipolo: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) advised motorists, especially those who will be passing by areas under the 2nd District of Antipolo City, to apply for gun ban exemption in connection with the March 14 special elections. Comelec chairperson George Garcia said those who are not based in the 2nd District of Antipolo City but still pass by Barangays Calawis, Cupang, Dalig, Inarawan, San Jose, San Juan, San Luis, and San Roque should secure gun ban exemptions.
According to Philippines News Agency, the gun ban is in effect during the election period from February 12 to March 29. Comelec chairperson George Garcia emphasized the importance of securing exemptions, stating that even those just passing through the district will be subject to the ban and could face arrest. The application process for gun ban exemption began on February 2 and will continue until March 18.
Meanwhile, Comelec highlighted that while the absolute ban on the release of public funds specifically targets the city's second district, national government assistance programs remain subject to the ban. These include social services programs such as the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) and Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, as well as Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) from the Department of Labor and Employment.
Garcia further noted that social services from both local and national governments will eventually be included in the banned acts, urging individuals to seek the necessary exemptions to avoid criminal and administrative consequences. Under Comelec Resolution No. 11185, there will be an absolute ban on the release of public funds from March 4 to 13, with burial and medical assistance being the only exemptions.
The special elections aim to elect a new lawmaker for the 2nd District of Antipolo City in the House of Representatives, following the passing of Rep. Romeo Acop. Seven candidates have filed their certificates of candidacy, including Dandin Infante, Reden Llama, Lorenzo Juan Sumulong III, Maria Trinidad Cafirma, Philip Conrad Acop, Nathaniel Lobigas, and Irvin Paulo Tapales.
