Gunman Arrested in Cotabato City After Botched Hit on Police Officer

Manila: Hours after executing a daylight gun attack that resulted in the death of a tricycle driver and injury to a police officer, the suspect was apprehended at a police-military checkpoint in Cotabato City on Monday afternoon.

According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Jibin Bongcayao, the city police director, identified the gunman as alias 'Jamir,' a 29-year-old resident of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. Jamir had been temporarily living with his wife in Sultan Kudarat town, Maguindanao del Norte. The arrest came shortly after the incident, which transpired on Jose Lim Street on Sunday morning, July 12.

Mayor Bruce Matabalao disclosed that during an interview with Jamir, the suspect confessed to targeting Police Cpl. Titing Kauring, whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife. Kauring sustained injuries in the attack but denied the allegations made by Jamir. Matabalao characterized the incident as a "crime of passion."

The attack unfolded when Kauring, traveling on a motorcycle, was shot three times by Jamir, who was also on a motorbike. Tragically, Nasser Gapor, a tricycle driver, was killed by stray bullets during the assault, and a child passenger was injured as well.

The breakthrough in the case occurred when Jamir was stopped at a police-Marines checkpoint in Barangay Poblacion 9 for operating a motorbike without a license plate. A subsequent search revealed that he was carrying an unlicensed .45-caliber pistol. Col. Bongcayao announced that the case is considered closed, with Jamir facing charges of murder, frustrated murder, and illegal possession of a firearm.
