Handa Pilipinas-Visayas to Showcase STI’s Role in Disaster Preparedness

Bacolod: The Negros Island Region (NIR) is set to host the 2025 Handa Pilipinas - Visayas leg, a three-day event focusing on the role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in enhancing disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). The event will take place from October 27 to 29 at the SMX Convention Center Bacolod, organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - NIR in collaboration with the Negros Occidental provincial government under the theme 'Padayon Visayas: STI for Resilient, United, and Sustainable Visayas.'

According to Philippines News Agency, Handa Pilipinas is part of a national campaign by the DOST to boost public awareness, promote collaboration, and build resilient and sustainable communities across the nation. DOST-Negros Occidental Director Allan Francis Dara-ug highlighted that the event would serve as a platform to share best practices, enhance coordination, and reinforce a collective commitment to creating safer and more resilient communities.

Director Dara-ug noted the strong intent of the Negros Occidental provincial government to host the event, given the ongoing activities of Kanlaon Volcano and the province's continuous efforts to bolster disaster preparedness and resilience. The Handa Pilipinas - Visayas will feature best practices and strategies in DRRM from various local and national government units, alongside disaster preparedness exhibits and a conference bringing together government leaders, scientists, innovators, educators, students, and media practitioners.

Engagement with the youth is also a significant focus, with activities such as a pitching competition for college students and a quiz bowl for elementary and high school students to promote disaster awareness and innovation among the younger generation. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech, emphasizing the Visayas region's exposure to hazards and the importance of preparedness as a way of life.

The event will also include the signing of an agreement between the DOST and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the handover of the Handa Pilipinas guidebook, exhibit modules, and water compendium, as well as the launch of Project Signal, a DOST initiative aimed at improving disaster preparedness in communities.
