Chonburi: Hidilyn Diaz finished fourth in the women's 58kg division of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games weightlifting competitions on Sunday at the Chonburi Sports School. The Tokyo Olympics gold medalist achieved a total lift of 200 kg, with 90 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk. This marked Diaz's return to the SEA Games after her gold medal win in the 55kg class during the Hanoi edition in 2022. According to Philippines News Agency, Yodsarn Suratwadee of Thailand claimed the gold medal with a total of 224 kg, following lifts of 96 kg in the snatch and 128 kg in the clean and jerk. Natasya Beteyob of Indonesia secured the silver with a total lift of 218 kg, having achieved 98 kg in the snatch and 120 kg in the clean and jerk. Diaz expressed regret for not securing a medal, acknowledging that her preparation was not optimal, both physically and mentally. The two-time SEA Games gold medalist is dealing with an injury in her right knee and had not competed for nearly two years. Despite this setb ack, Diaz is determined to improve as she looks forward to upcoming tournaments, including the Olympic qualifiers for the Los Angeles Games next year. Diaz shared, "First, I want to say sorry, but I did my best. After not qualifying in Paris, medyo nawalan ako ng (I lost my) motivation and this is my first international competition after 2024. I'm happy to be back again." She began strongly with lifts of 88 and 90 but stumbled on her third snatch attempt at 92. In the clean and jerk, she registered 110 in her first lift but was unsuccessful in her attempts at 115 and 116, which would have kept her in medal contention. The weightlifting competition continues on Monday with Day 3, featuring 2025 World Championship bronze medalist Elreen Ando competing in the women's 63kg category.
