Manila: The government's campaign against African swine fever (ASF) has recorded a 90 percent vaccine efficacy rate, Malaca±ang announced. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro shared that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed satisfaction with the report presented by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. regarding the success of government-supervised vaccinations among healthy and ASF-negative hogs.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) employed AVAC live vaccines in a comprehensive rollout, which has so far included nearly 500,000 hogs across 12 semi-commercial farms, nine smallholder farms, and one government-run farm. The vaccination initiative has been executed in several provinces, including Batangas, Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Pampanga.
BAI's ASF data, as of December 11, indicates that there are currently 31 barangays with active ASF cases across six regions: Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Eastern Visayas, and Soccsksargen. This ongoing effort reflects the government's commitment to controlling and eventually eradicating ASF in the affected areas.
