Butuan: An increase in the number of individuals found positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the Caraga Region was logged this year compared to 2024. During the Kapihan sa SM on Tuesday, Arlene Serrano, the HIV program coordinator of the Department of Health in Caraga Region (DOH-13), said they recorded a total of 2,195 HIV cases this year. The number is 731 higher compared to the 1,464 cases registered last year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Agusan del Sur recorded the highest number of cases this year with 379, an increase of 136 from 243 cases last year. Among the cities in the region, Butuan also had the highest number of infections this year with 522, or an increase of 155 compared to the 367 cases last year.
'Unsafe sex is among the factors that contributed to the increase in the number of HIV cases in the region,' Serrano said. She added that through a series of information and education campaigns, residents in the region have become more aware of HIV, which convinced them to get tested.
'Our testing facilities are also available in the different areas in the region. As of this year, all of our 13 treatment hubs are also considered as testing facilities,' Serrano said. Nine of the total testing hubs and facilities are already considered confirmatory laboratories, she added.
Data provided by DOH-13 also indicated that most of the HIV-positive individuals in the region are aged 25-34, or 49 percent, and those aged 15 to 24, with 35 percent. The rest of the numbers are those at ages 15 and below, 35 to 49, and 50 and older.
Male-to-male sex is also considered the highest in HIV transmission with 1,357 cases; male-to-male/female sex accounts for 492 cases; male-to-female sex involves 307 cases; and the remaining cases are unknown.
"Our campaign continues in the region as we call on residents to undergo HIV testing. Treatment at all our facilities is free, including the medicines," Serrano said. She noted that the DOH-13 is also collaborating with other government agencies, especially the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local government units, to further raise HIV awareness.
