Iloilo: The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is encouraging Ilonggos to avail of the Enterprise-Based Education and Training (EBET) program scheduled this month. TESDA Iloilo Director Esther Babalo announced that the province has secured an allocation of more than PHP10 million for this scholarship initiative, which will be conducted by the enterprises themselves.
According to Philippines News Agency, Babalo emphasized that the training will bring learners directly into the workplace, allowing them to experience the day-to-day operations of businesses and the culture inside the workplace. This approach offers a more immersive experience compared to simulated training environments.
Participants in the program will receive various forms of support. Those in the general EBET will get meal and transportation allowances, while apprentices will earn 75 percent of the existing minimum wage. Existing employees undergoing upskilling will receive a salary during their training. Additionally, if the training is covered by a TESDA scholarship, participants will receive the training support fund as specified in the scholarship allocation.
For industries, Babalo highlighted the dual benefits of gaining direct access to a pool of manpower and playing a role in developing a quality workforce. Enterprises can also earn tax incentives for training-related expenses and will be compensated for the cost of training.
Currently, TESDA has registered at least nine enterprises with the qualification map (QM), including those offering training in hilot (Filipino massage), housekeeping, animation, cookery, and weaving. Efforts are underway to register industries in electrical power distribution, construction, electrical powerline distribution, maintenance and electrical installation, and business process outsourcing.
Babalo noted that some enterprises are ready to commence training, with the expectation that all nine will begin before the end of the year. The length of each training program will depend on its specific training regulations.
