Manila: Senator Risa Hontiveros has initiated cyber libel proceedings at the Department of Justice against seven individuals linked to a viral video that allegedly accuses her of coercing a witness into providing false testimonies.
According to Philippines News Agency, the respondents named in the complaint include lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, Byron Cristobal alias Banat By, Jeffrey 'Ka Eric' Celiz, Krizette 'Kiffy' Chu, Jose 'Jay' Sonza, and Alex Destor alias Tio Moreno. Additionally, former Senate witness Michael Maurilio is cited in the complaint for claiming in the viral video that Hontiveros bribed him to testify against former president Rodrigo Duterte, Vice President Sara Duterte, and Pastor Apollo Quiboloy during a Senate hearing.
Hontiveros has denied these accusations, emphasizing the need for justice when false claims are made against those who serve with integrity. She stated in her complaint that the allegations are a grave injustice and criticized the spreading of unsubstantiated claims through social media, which she describes as deliberate attacks aiming to tarnish her reputation.
Highlighting the importance of responsible use of digital platforms, Hontiveros asserted that freedom of expression should be exercised in good faith and not be used as a tool to harm others. Topacio, one of the respondents, mentioned that he has not yet received a copy of the complaint.
Previously, Hontiveros had approached the National Bureau of Investigation for assistance in identifying the creators of the videos and investigating vloggers who may have amplified the false claims. Maurilio, who initially came forward as a witness during Hontiveros' Senate probe, had provided information alleging abuses by Quiboloy and the presence of armed Duterte family members at Quiboloy's compound. However, he later recanted his testimony in a video that gained significant attention last month.
