Hontiveros: ICC Arrest Warrant Against Duterte a Step Toward Justice

Manila: Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros on Tuesday welcomed the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against former President Rodrigo Duterte, describing it as a significant moment for the families of thousands killed during his administration's anti-illegal drugs campaign.

According to Philippines News Agency, Hontiveros emphasized that this development is a long-awaited moment for those affected by the Duterte administration's 'tokhang' operations. Tokhang, or Oplan Tokhang, refers to the program where authorities conducted house-to-house visits targeting individuals suspected of involvement in illegal drug activities.

Hontiveros urged Duterte to fulfill his previous commitment to face the charges against him at the ICC, highlighting the importance of adhering to legal processes. She expressed that as a lawyer, Duterte should respect and follow the proceedings.

Furthermore, Hontiveros called on the current administration to cooperate fully with the ICC and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to ensure due process and accountability. She stressed the need for Malaca±ang to honor its commitments and assist in the pursuit of justice through the ICC and Interpol, recognizing that the Tokhang-related deaths were not solely the responsibility of one individual.

The ICC has been investigating the alleged crimes against humanity associated with Duterte's war on illegal drugs, which human rights groups claim resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings. Hontiveros expressed hope that the ICC's actions would initiate a broader quest for justice against all government officials and personnel implicated in these killings.
