House Prosecution Panel Reserves Right to Call VP Sara Duterte in Impeachment Trial

Manila: The House prosecution panel has reserved the right to seek a subpoena for Vice President Sara Duterte to appear in her ongoing impeachment trial. This development comes as the panel considers calling her as a witness concerning charges of grave threats and acts of sedition.

According to Philippines News Agency, on the second day of the trial, prosecution counsel Lorna Kapunan inquired whether Duterte, who was reportedly present at the Senate premises, intended to appear before the impeachment court. The inquiry was made in preparation for presenting evidence on the first article, which involves charges where Duterte could be considered a key yet hostile witness.

Kapunan announced their intention to formally request Duterte's presence as part of their strategy to address the article on grave threats. However, Presiding Officer Francis 'Chiz' Escudero declined to direct the question to Duterte's legal team, emphasizing that the impeachment rules do not require her personal attendance since she is already represented by counsel.

Escudero clarified that the rules do not mandate Duterte's attendance at any hearing or trial, but assured that the court would consider any formal motion to call her as a witness, allowing the defense to respond accordingly.

Kapunan reiterated the prosecution's commitment to comply with the ruling while maintaining their right to summon Duterte at an appropriate time. She emphasized that the option to request a subpoena remains open.

The impeachment court had previously permitted the prosecution to start their presentation with the article focused on grave threats, with plans to subsequently address issues related to confidential funds, bribery, and unexplained wealth.
