Manila: The House prosecution on Monday expressed that it remains unfazed by the potential attendance of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte at the Senate impeachment trial, asserting that her presence would not alter its strategy nor intimidate the prosecutors.
According to Philippines News Agency, the statement was issued amidst speculation that the Vice President might personally attend the impeachment proceedings following hints from her camp about the possibility. During a press briefing at the Senate, former Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, who serves as the spokesperson and adviser to the House prosecution, emphasized that the panel has thoroughly prepared for the evidentiary phase of the trial and will proceed as planned, irrespective of who is present in the courtroom.
Barbers explained that Duterte's attendance would provide the public an opportunity to hear her response to the allegations outlined in the Articles of Impeachment. He expressed that attending would be beneficial for the Vice President, as it allows Filipinos to hear directly from her regarding the allegations presented by the House of Representatives.
Lawyer Benjamin 'Jay' Tolosa Jr., legal spokesperson and counsel for the House prosecutors, reiterated that the prosecution's strategy would remain unchanged, regardless of whether Duterte personally appears before the impeachment court. He highlighted that her attendance would demonstrate respect for the constitutional process and allow the public to hear her answers to the accusations.
House prosecution spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong stated that Duterte's potential presence at the trial would offer her a proper forum to address the accusations against her. He dismissed any suggestions that her presence could intimidate the prosecution, emphasizing the focus on the trial process and accountability.
Adiong added that the prosecution hopes Duterte's attendance, if she decides to appear, would reflect her commitment to facing the impeachment case seriously, noting her previous statements about being ready to answer the case.
