Manila: House Quad Committee (quad comm) chair Robert Ace Barbers on Wednesday reaffirmed the panel's commitment to fairness during its hearing on the alleged extrajudicial killings linked to the previous administration's drug war. In his opening remarks, Barbers emphasized the committee's objective to uncover the truth and extended an invitation to former president Rodrigo Duterte to address the allegations against him. According to Philippines News Agency, Barbers stated that the committee aimed to provide Duterte with an opportunity to explain and refute the accusations. He noted that Duterte's acceptance of the invitation to attend the hearing disproves claims made by Duterte's lawyer, Martin Delgra III, who had questioned the committee's integrity and independence. He assured Duterte that his rights would be respected throughout the proceedings and expressed gratitude for the former president's attendance. The hearing, initially scheduled for November 13, was canceled but later proceeded after Duterte confirmed his participation. Abang Lingkod Rep. and quad comm co-chair Joseph Stephen Paduano reiterated the committee's commitment to a transparent investigation, emphasizing the importance of a fair and open inquiry. Paduano cautioned against using the hearing for personal or political gains, highlighting the seriousness of the proceedings. He urged participants to focus on uncovering the truth and conducting the session with integrity and purpose. Manila Rep. and quad comm co-chair Bienvenido Abante Jr. stated that the inquiry's purpose is to seek accountability and recommend avenues for justice.
