Manila: House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Friday emphasized that the House of Representatives will not tolerate corruption and will ensure full accountability in government affairs. This statement comes in response to the recent call from the business community and civil society for an end to corruption within government sectors, reflecting the House's dedication to transparency, accountability, and integrity.
According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez articulated his firm stance against corruption, stating, "Let me be clear: the House of the People will never condone corruption, whether in public works, local governance, or any other area of government service. Allegations of wrongdoing must be investigated thoroughly and addressed decisively." He further expressed support for independent scrutiny and fair prosecution to ensure accountability.
The statement was issued following demands from business groups and civil society organizations (CSOs) to address corruption, especially in light of ongoing investigations into questionable flood control projects. Romualdez highlighted the House's proactive measures to reform the budget process, aiming to restore public trust and enhance accountability.
Key reforms introduced include increased transparency in budget hearings and bicameral deliberations, stricter oversight of lump-sum and unprogrammed appropriations, enhanced citizen participation and CSO engagement, and the institutionalization of budget modernization measures. Romualdez emphasized that these reforms are practical steps intended to ensure prudent and responsible allocation and spending of the national budget.
He urged collaboration between business leaders, professionals, and civic organizations with Congress to fully implement these reforms. "Together, let us build a governance culture where every peso is protected, every project is transparent, and every public official is held to the highest standard of service," Romualdez concluded.
