Manila: Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Friday paid tribute to the late Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, recognizing the political icon as a stalwart of Philippine politics for 60 years. 'Juan Ponce Enrile was an icon of stability during times of tribulation in our history,' Bersamin said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, Bersamin extended his condolences to Enrile's family, saying the late Palace official will always be remembered as 'a legal luminary and political titan whose contributions to public life profoundly shaped the history of our country.' Bersamin emphasized that Enrile, also known as 'Manong Johnny,' remained steadfast in championing the Filipino people's interests throughout his six decades of distinguished public service.
'In his capacity as a Cabinet member across various administrations, he worked tirelessly and selflessly to strengthen our institutions and to uphold the principles and tenets that make our nation great,' Bersamin said. 'As a senator, he drew on his vast knowledge and long service in government to craft legislation that has promoted and safeguarded the dignity and well-being of all citizens. His stint as Senate President strengthened the chamber, enabling it to overcome the many political challenges of the time.'
Bersamin recalled Enrile's memorable mantra, 'Gusto ko happy ka (I want you to be happy),' saying the phrase is forever etched in the consciousness of the Filipino people, whom he loyally served until the end 'with utmost dedication and unqualified commitment.' 'As we grieve his loss, may we find inspiration in his work and example, and strive to preserve the worthy legacy he has left behind,' he said.
Born on February 14, 1924, in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Enrile was a central figure in Philippine politics for six decades. Enrile was a lawyer who, over his six-decade political career, served as a Cabinet official, senator, and Senate President from 2008 to 2013. He first rose to prominence in the 1960s under the Marcos administration, eventually becoming Minister of National Defense, and was elected to the Senate in 1987, earning a reputation for his legislative expertise.
In recent years, he returned to public service as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
