Iloilo city: The city council has adopted and approved a resolution from the local disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) council to reprogram its 2026 DRRM fund, providing PHP200,000 in financial assistance to eight local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on June 8.
According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake resulted in extensive loss of lives, injuries, destruction of public infrastructure, damage to residential properties, displacement of thousands of families, and disruption of essential public services. These impacts necessitated immediate humanitarian assistance from other local government units. The resolution, authored by Councilor Johnny Young, highlights the need for support to address the aftermath of the disaster.
The local DRRM council, through Resolution No. 4, decided to reprogram its activities under the 2026 local DRRM fund to provide this assistance, a move that was subsequently approved by the city council. The recipient LGUs include General Santos City in South Cotabato; Glan, Maasim, Malapatan, and Kiamba in Sarangani; and Jose Abad Santos, Sarangani Island, and Malita in Davao Occidental.
Councilor Young emphasized that disasters transcend political boundaries and that it is crucial for local governments to unite in compassion, cooperation, and mutual assistance during times of great calamities. Through these measures, Iloilo City extends its support to fellow Filipinos working to recover from one of the strongest earthquakes experienced in recent years.
