Manila: The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved a general budget exceeding PHP4.5 billion for 2026, alongside an additional PHP86.96 million designated for the city's local economic enterprises. This decision was reached during the city council's regular session on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Appropriations Committee chairperson Rex Marcus Sarabia reported that the upcoming year's budget marks an 8.62 percent increase compared to the current year's allocation. Of the anticipated income, 55.13 percent is expected from local revenue streams, while 44.87 percent will be sourced externally.

Sarabia highlighted significant allocations within the budget, such as PHP30 million for assistance to individuals in crisis, a substantial increase from the current PHP12 million. New allocations include PHP20 million for medical assistance and PHP8 million for funeral aid. Additionally, PHP30 million is earmarked for employment assistance. He expressed satisfaction with the budget, noting that nearly PHP100 million is dedicated to public services and assistance.

The budget also encompasses salary increases and health insurance coverage for job orders. Furthermore, Sarabia announced funding between PHP40 million to PHP70 million for socialized housing, emphasizing the importance of securing relocation sites for those impacted by flood control projects. He described this as a crucial initiative by the city government to advance flood control efforts, whether managed by the Iloilo City government or the national government.

The overall budget allocation designates 29.98 percent for personal services, 39.32 percent for miscellaneous and other operating expenses, 10.31 percent for capital outlay, 3.24 percent for financial expenses, and 17.15 percent for special purpose appropriations.
