Iloilo city: Iloilo City is poised to showcase its rich heritage and local industries as it prepares to host the 49th Meeting of the High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Economic Integration next week. In a media interview, Mayor Raisa Tre±as emphasized the significance of hosting delegates from ASEAN member countries, including economic ministers, from February 25 to 27.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Tre±as highlighted that the city's designation as a UNESCO Creative City and its ASEAN Clean City Awards were key factors in its selection as the meeting venue. The local government, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, has meticulously planned the schedule and venues to promote Iloilo City's cultural and industrial heritage. Delegates will experience the city's historic charm as they dine in heritage houses after the meetings.
Mayor Tre±as further noted that the event serves as an opportunity to promote local industries on an international scale, potentially boosting job creation and economic activity within the community. Ahead of the meeting, she convened an interagency meeting to ensure the event's successful and safe execution, with a focus on economic and trade discussions.
The city will also host two additional ASEAN meetings in April and May. Iloilo City Police Office officer-in-charge Col. Wilbert Parilla announced the deployment of nearly 1,000 personnel, with a send-off ceremony scheduled for Friday. A multiagency coordinating center will be operational in anticipation of delegate arrivals over the weekend. The mayor has approved the suspension of face-to-face classes to alleviate traffic congestion during the event. Police assistance desks will be established at key venues and tourist destinations to ensure safety and security.
