Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued a reminder that incumbent village officials who are currently serving their third consecutive terms will not be permitted to participate in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled for November 2, 2026. The restriction is part of the three-term limit set forth in Republic Act No. 12232, which outlines the term limits for barangay officials and members of the Sangguniang Kabataan.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Resolution No. 11207 clearly states, "Incumbent elective barangay officials serving their third consecutive term in the same position shall not be eligible to run for the same position in the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections." The resolution reinforces the rule that no elective barangay official may serve more than three consecutive terms in the same position.

While this limitation applies to barangay officials, incumbent Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials elected in 2023 are still eligible to seek reelection. This is due to the transitory provisions of the law, which do not extend to current youth officials. The newly established four-year term law will be applicable during the 2026 electoral cycle.

The filing period for certificates of candidacy for the BSKE is set to take place from September 28 to October 5.
