Indonesia Quake Leaves 47 Dead, 9,290 Displaced

East nusa tenggara: The number of people sheltering in evacuation centers after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara Province on Saturday rose to 9,290, Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.

According to Philippines News Agency, the disaster agency also reported 47 deaths and 101 people injured and receiving medical treatment. Speaking here Sunday, acting head of BNPB's Data, Information and Disaster Communications Center Berton SP Panjaitan said the latest figures showed the largest concentrations in Sikka, with 3,356 people, and Manggarai, with 2,078.

In Sikka District, 1,356 people are sheltering at Samador Sports Hall, while 2,000 others are staying independently across 10 locations. About 500 people were also displaced in Nagekeo, West Nusa Tenggara's Bima City, and South Sulawesi's Selayar Islands, bringing the total to 9,290. Meeting basic needs and providing logistics at evacuation centers are now the main priorities during the emergency response, Berton said.

Survivors, particularly in Manggarai District, urgently need dozens of emergency tents, 30 metric tons of rice, medicines, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 folding beds, 1,000 mats, clean water and tanks, and generators. Manggarai recorded the highest number of deaths at 23, followed by East Manggarai District with 17. Sikka reported four deaths, while the districts of West Manggarai, Ende, and Nagekeo each recorded one.

The offshore earthquake damaged 1,357 homes, including 914 that were heavily damaged, 126 moderately damaged, and 317 lightly damaged, BNPB said. The disaster also severely damaged public facilities, including 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, and 38 government offices across East Nusa Tenggara.
