Costa navarino: The Hormuz Strait should be reopened without any tolls or restrictions, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday. Speaking at the Europe-Gulf Forum held at Greece's southern resort of Costa Navarino, Meloni emphasized Italy's stance on resolving the ongoing crisis in the strategic strait.
According to Philippines News Agency, Meloni outlined her vision for a sustainable solution to the crisis, which hinges on the crucial reopening of the Hormuz Strait. She stressed that the strait should be free from tolls and discriminatory restrictions, highlighting the importance of freedom of navigation for the prosperity not only of the Mediterranean and the Gulf regions but for the entire world.
Meloni further stated Italy's readiness to contribute to the safety of navigation in the region. This commitment is based on Italy's previous involvement in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean through the European Union's Aspides and Atalanta missions. She underscored the importance of these efforts in ensuring safe maritime passage.
Additionally, Meloni expressed concerns about Iran's potential acquisition of nuclear weapons, which she argued poses a threat to its neighbors. The Italian premier made it clear that such developments would not be acceptable, indicating a continued focus on regional security and stability.
