Manila: Amid the high prices of pork in local markets, the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday announced plans to make cheaper pork available to more Filipinos through its Kadiwa ng Pangulo (KNP) sites. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that while the initiative is not intended to compete with retailers, it aims to provide more affordable options for consumers.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tiu Laurel anticipates that this move will help reduce inflationary pressures on pork, starting in the first week of August. He emphasized that the initiative is not limited to minimum wage earners but is open to all consumers. "Just go to our stalls, they can buy. While supplies last, of course," Tiu Laurel remarked.
The reduced prices are attributed to government intervention in logistics and middlemen costs. Tiu Laurel explained that Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) will purchase directly from farms, handle the slaughtering, and deliver to outlets, resulting in a price reduction of approximately PHP50.
As of June 13, the prices of local pork ham remain high, ranging from PHP350 to PHP430 per kilogram, while pork belly is priced between PHP380 and PHP490 per kilogram, as reported by the DA-Bantay Presyo (Price Watch). In contrast, frozen pork products show lower prices, with kasim ranging from PHP230 to PHP300 per kilogram and liempo from PHP290 to PHP350 per kilogram.
Tiu Laurel also mentioned that imported pork sales are welcomed at KNP sites to support local sources. The initial rollout of cheaper pork will be available in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, and in 38 KNP centers, public markets, and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-accredited establishments and organizations.
