Kin of Missing ‘Sabungeros’ File Murder Charges Against Businessman Atong Ang

Manila: Relatives of the missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight enthusiasts) have taken a significant legal step by filing murder and illegal detention charges against businessman Atong Ang and several others. This development took place on Friday at the Department of Justice.

According to Philippines News Agency, among the families pursuing the charges is that of Michael Bautista, represented by his brother, Ryan Bautista. Ryan expressed relief and satisfaction, stating, "Of course, we are very happy because we waited four years for this," during his interaction with reporters.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla addressed the media at a press conference, emphasizing the importance of due process for those implicated in the case. "We are fair. We do not condemn without listening. What is important is due process. No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law," Remulla remarked.

The accusations against Atong Ang are substantiated by a witness who claims Ang was involved as the mastermind and leader of a criminal organization responsible for the crimes. Despite these allegations, Ang has denied the charges and has filed countercharges against Julie Patidongan, his former employee who made the accusations.

Remulla also highlighted the importance of the whistleblower's testimony, which has provided substantial information about the alleged crimes. "We were given information on how it was undertaken and who were involved in the crime against the missing sabungeros," he said.

The Justice Secretary stressed the necessity of a future trial to bring clarity and peace of mind to the Filipino public. "What is important is there should be a trial in the future so that Filipinos will have peace of mind," Remulla added.

The murder charges also include several unidentified individuals, referred to as John and Jane Does, and actress Gretchen Barretto may be considered a person of interest in the investigation.
