Manila: De La Salle University dominated the University of the East with a straight-set victory, 26-24, 25-13, 25-23, in the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday. Michael John Fortuna led the Green Spikers with 13 points, including 10 attacks and three blocks, while Vince Gerard Maglinao contributed 11 points and eight digs, helping La Salle secure a 3-2 record for solo fourth place.
According to Philippines News Agency, Noel Kampton added eight points, sealing La Salle's 32-minute first-set win with a crucial block. The match took a turn in the second set when UE setter Dave Harold Poquita sustained a left foot injury, allowing La Salle to take control in just 23 minutes. Despite the setback, the Red Warriors fought back in the third set, with wing spiker Steven Aligayon stepping in as setter.
"I just reminded the team that whatever the result may be, fight for it. Even if UE's setter was no longer there, it doesn't mean they would just give up the game. So, I told them to keep on going," said La Salle head coach Jose Roque. UE remained winless at 0-6 despite rookie Roy Gabriel Piojo's 10-point effort.
De La Salle will face Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday.
