Lacson: Healthy Exchange of Ideas to Help Craft Parents’ Welfare Bill

Manila: Senator Panfilo Lacson on Monday expressed his openness to a healthy exchange of ideas from the public to improve and enhance his proposed Parents Welfare Act, urging both critics and supporters to participate in hearings on the bill.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson emphasized the importance of constructive feedback in refining the bill's contents. He acknowledged that online discussions have highlighted the changing dynamics of family relationships influenced by modern times. As lawmakers, their responsibility is to consider these concerns in the legislative process.

Lacson addressed misconceptions surrounding his proposed measure, which he believes detract from the bill's purpose. He invited discourse on the subject, along with constructive criticisms, arguments, and counter-arguments, believing they could enrich the proposal.

The senator dedicated the legislation to struggling parents who have selflessly supported their children but remain less fortunate. He also offered the bill in honor of his own parents, Maxima and Buenaventura, who instilled in him values of integrity.

Lacson clarified that the bill aims to support elderly parents neglected by ungrateful children, despite the parents' sacrifices for their children's betterment. The legislation seeks to aid parents who are sick, incapacitated, and struggling to survive, yet abandoned by their financially capable children.

The senator also addressed concerns about the bill fostering dependency, stating it does not support undeserving parents exploiting their children financially. He assured that the bill includes safeguards, such as exemptions for abused, neglected, and financially incapacitated children.
