Manila: The city government is equipping its 64 schools with at least two portable metal detectors each as part of broader efforts to strengthen campus security and provide a safer learning environment for students, teachers, and staff.

According to Philippines News Agency, Laoag City Mayor James Bryan Alcid confirmed this development following a meeting with Department of Education officials. The initiative is a response to the deadly June 22 shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City. In conjunction with this effort, the Philippine National Police has pledged to enhance security by deploying police officers and village peacekeeping officers near schools. This includes improving security screening at school entrances and preventing the entry of prohibited or dangerous items onto school premises.

"These measures form part of a wider school safety strategy that includes emergency preparedness, visitor management, and increased security awareness," Alcid said in an interview. DepEd-Laoag project development officer Imee Nicolas emphasized that the initiative is a beneficial development aimed at enhancing security measures and helping students and staff feel safe.

Further consultations with the Office of the Mayor and the Barangay Councils are planned to discuss the deployment of additional security personnel, particularly in schools that lack security guards. Parents have expressed their support for the program and encouraged authorities to complement it with guidance counseling, anti-violence initiatives, and mental health support.

Additional security personnel will be installed gradually, starting with schools that require increased security. Authorities have assured that they will continue to review the program's effectiveness and make necessary adjustments to ensure schools remain safe and conducive to learning.
