Manila: The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) officially inaugurated the National Museum of the Philippines-Baler on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in the preservation and promotion of Aurora's cultural, historical, artistic, and natural heritage. The inauguration event featured the unveiling of the museum marker and was attended by notable figures such as Spanish Ambassador Miguel Utray Delgado, Education Secretary Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu-Laurel Jr., and Tourism Secretary Maria Bernardita Angara-Mathay. Vincent William Araneta Marcos, the son of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., was also present, along with national and local officials, cultural leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.
According to Philippines News Agency, the event coincided with the 24th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, emphasizing the enduring historical and cultural connections between the Philippines and Spain. It also highlighted Aurora's growing role as a center for cultural tourism and heritage conservation. The museum, designed by renowned Filipino architect Ed Calma, draws inspiration from Aurora's scenic landscapes and the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. Its contemporary architecture reflects the province's identity while serving as a venue for education, cultural appreciation, heritage preservation, and community engagement.
The museum boasts three permanent galleries that showcase Aurora's history, biodiversity, culture, and artistic heritage. The Cruce de Caminos Gallery explores the historical relationship between the Philippines and Spain with significant artifacts, including the rare Mariner's Astrolabe, the historic Komedya de Baler, and archaeological discoveries from the Julio Site. The Sierra, Tierra, Costa Gallery presents Aurora's natural environment through exhibits featuring endemic species, geological formations, and the province's renowned surfing culture. It also honors the resilience of Aurora's communities following the devastating Tromba Marina. The Tagpuan/Encuentro Gallery features contemporary artworks by leading Filipino artists.
In addition to the exhibits, the museum offers guided tours, educational programs, community engagement activities, and the newly opened Oron by Crumby Crust Caf©. Aurora Rep. Rommel Rico T. Angara expressed his pride in the museum's opening, calling it a significant milestone for Aurora. "This is a great honor for Aurora because it has now become part of our nation's history and our enduring ties with Spain. What makes this museum even more remarkable is that admission is completely free," Angara stated.
Baler Mayor Rhett Ronan T. Angara described the inauguration as the beginning of a new chapter in preserving Aurora's rich history, culture, and natural heritage. Beginning July 1, 2026, the museum will be open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on government holidays, with free admission.
