‘Standee’ Joins Antique University Graduation March

Manila: Not even death prevented Cherilyn Cahilig from 'marching' at the graduation day of University of Antique (UA) Tario Lim Campus in Tibiao town on Monday. Cahilig was supposed to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management degree but was killed in a vehicular accident while on her way home to Barangay Bagacay from Lipata Port in Culasi on May 29. Her teachers and classmates ensured she was part of the ceremony by preparing a standee, which was carried by her father, Cesar, during the procession and when he received her diploma.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cherilyn's younger brother, Cerino, expressed the family's pride and sorrow during the event. 'Cherilyn had big dreams for our family. She wanted us to rise from poverty,' Cerino said in an interview on Tuesday. They went to school together at UA, where Cerino is currently in his junior year, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems.

Cerino hopes to support his family and siblings after graduation, aspiring to secure a job immediately. He has two younger siblings, both in high school, and their father is a farmer while their mother is a housewife. This poignant gesture at the graduation ceremony highlights the enduring impact of Cherilyn's aspirations and the collective effort of her community to honor her memory.
