Lawmaker Claims Roque Evading Justice with Netherlands Asylum Bid

Manila: Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque is seeking asylum in the Netherlands in an effort to avoid accountability for his alleged involvement in illegal Philippine offshore gaming operations (POGOs) and related crimes, including human trafficking.

According to Philippines News Agency, House Assistant Majority Leader and Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre described Roque's asylum bid as a maneuver to escape consequences. Acidre stated that Roque has been cited in contempt and detained for refusing to cooperate in an investigation into POGO-related criminal activities. Acidre questioned Roque's need to flee the country if he has nothing to hide.

A human trafficking case was filed against Roque and two others before the Department of Justice late in 2024. Government prosecutors allege that Roque used his position to protect and facilitate criminal syndicates operating offshore gambling hubs involved in human trafficking, cyber fraud, and money laundering.

Acidre expressed that Roque's sudden asylum application raises further suspicions about his involvement in illegal operations. He urged law enforcement agencies to work with international authorities to prevent Roque from using asylum to avoid prosecution.

He emphasized that the law must take its course and that international legal mechanisms should not be exploited to evade criminal liability. Acidre affirmed that efforts will be made to ensure Roque faces justice, whether domestically or internationally.
