Manila: A member of the House of Representatives' nuclear energy committee has expressed support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s initiative to revisit nuclear energy production as a means to bolster the country's energy security and mitigate rising electricity costs.

According to Philippines News Agency, Solid North Party-list Representative Ching Bernos welcomed the President's call, highlighting the necessity of exploring various energy alternatives amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict, which underscores the need to reduce dependence on oil. Bernos emphasized that while nuclear energy is a complex topic that will not be resolved immediately, it is crucial to consider other energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal.

Bernos stressed that the implementation of a nuclear energy program is a long-term undertaking. She noted that any groundwork laid by the Marcos administration in the next two years would merely be the initial steps towards utilizing nuclear energy, cautioning against rushing the process or taking shortcuts.

The lawmaker outlined several challenges that need to be addressed before a nuclear reactor could become operational in the Philippines. These challenges include training personnel for construction, operation, and maintenance, among other related aspects.

Furthermore, Bernos pointed out the importance of consulting and collaborating with countries that have successfully adopted nuclear energy. She emphasized the need to learn from their best practices to avoid potential mishaps and tragedies.
