Lawmaker Pushes Consumer Safeguards, MSME Support in Trade Policies

Manila: Senator Rodante Marcoleta on Thursday emphasized that trade reforms should prioritize Filipino consumers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship held its organizational hearing. Marcoleta highlighted the need for economic growth and poverty reduction, stating that the focus is on development rather than business losses for local entrepreneurs.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcoleta stressed the importance of policies that stabilize prices, ensure quality and affordable products, and protect consumers, including those in online marketplaces. He emphasized the committee's commitment to measures that ensure fair and safe treatment of consumers across all platforms.

Marcoleta further pledged to support the promotion of a "true Filipino brand" that enhances local talent and creativity while safeguarding intellectual property. He noted that trade should strengthen the country's business, investment, and job creation capabilities without causing disadvantage.

During the organizational briefing, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) outlined the country's international engagements. These include negotiations for free trade agreements with the European Union, United Arab Emirates, and Chile, as well as the Philippines' formal application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

DTI Undersecretary Allan Gepty reported that 71 percent of Philippine trade is already covered by free trade agreement partners. Ongoing negotiations aim to expand market access, secure tariff preferences, and integrate provisions related to digital trade, labor standards, and sustainability.
