Zamboanga city: SSS-GSIS Pensyonado Party-list Representative Rolando Macasaet has raised concerns over an impending sardine shortage as fuel prices continue to rise. Macasaet has urged government agencies to take immediate action to address this pressing issue.

According to Philippines News Agency, Macasaet, a native of Zamboanga, emphasized that the ongoing increase in fuel costs poses a significant threat to the sardine industry, which employs over 30,000 workers in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Various sectors within the industry, including fishing, canning, and tin can production, are reportedly being forced to reduce operations.

Macasaet echoed the worries of the Southern Philippines Fishing Association and the Department of Labor and Employment, noting that approximately 70 percent of current sardine industry operations are feeling the strain. He highlighted the vital role this industry plays in the livelihoods of his fellow Zamboangue±os.

The lawmaker pointed out that the decline in fishing activities would have a domino effect on canning and packaging processes, ultimately impacting the entire industry. Reports indicate that fisherfolk are experiencing reduced daily income due to fewer fishing trips, while factory and tin workers are facing reduced hours or possible job loss.

Macasaet underlined that the issue extends beyond employment, affecting food security as sardines are a crucial protein source for many Filipino families. He called on various government agencies to implement more significant measures to tackle this burgeoning crisis.
