Legarda Highlights Influence of Philippine Studies Program in Global Diplomacy

Manila: Senator Loren Legarda emphasized the significant impact of the Philippine Studies Program in enhancing international relations and amplifying the country's presence on the global platform.

According to Philippines News Agency, Legarda spoke at the launch of a book dedicated to the Philippine Studies Program, highlighting how diplomacy extends beyond traditional venues like embassies and into educational and cultural settings. She stressed that libraries, classrooms, and acts of curiosity are pivotal in diplomatic efforts. Legarda expressed that these educational interactions allow for mutual shaping of narratives and foster deeper communication.

Legarda, an advocate for cultural and educational initiatives, highlighted her commitment to promoting cultural diplomacy through storytelling. She pointed out that in a world filled with uncertainties, understanding builds the strongest connections. The Philippines' role as the Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year marks a notable achievement, being only the second Southeast Asian nation to receive this honor.

Established in collaboration with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in 2017, the Philippine Studies Program has grown into a global initiative present in 24 universities worldwide. The program focuses on scholarly research in areas including the medicinal properties of Philippine plants, labor migration due to climate change, and the preservation of indigenous languages.

Legarda described the initiative as a strategic form of soft power that showcases the Filipino experience on a global stage, fostering curiosity about the nation's heritage and strengthening international ties across various sectors. She emphasized that the program serves as a model for nations to assert their identity while contributing to global scholarship.

In her concluding remarks, Legarda noted that the Philippine Studies Program exemplifies how countries can be both custodians of their cultural identity and active contributors to global discourse, envisioning a shared future built on collaboration and mutual understanding.
