Pasay City: Despite being disproportionately affected by climate change, Senator Loren Legarda acknowledged on Monday women as demonstrators of remarkable resilience and "powerful agents of change." According to Philippines News Agency, in her keynote speech during the Philippine Resilience Awards held at SMX Manila in Pasay City, Legarda emphasized the importance of women's knowledge, experience, and leadership in building community resilience. She urged for the amplification of women's voices in decision-making processes at all levels of government, highlighting their crucial role in effective climate action. During the event, two video documentaries, "Journey to Climate Resilience: The Philippine Story" and "Filipina Changemakers," were launched. These films showcase inspiring stories of women leading transformative climate action in the Philippines, including figures like Nida Collado and Mila Boñgalbal. Legarda cited these individuals as proof of the positive impact that empowered women can have on the ir communities. Collado, a 2023 awardee and farmer-leader of the Macatumbalen Community-Based Forest and Coastal Management Association in San Vicente, Palawan, mobilized community resources to enhance forest protection against illegal logging. Meanwhile, Boñgalbal, president of the Joroan Farmers Association in Tiwi, Albay, trained 68 farmer members in resilient practices, focusing on food security through sustainable livelihoods like abaca drying and livestock and vegetable farming. Legarda highlighted the central role of women in resilience efforts, noting that the "Filipina Changemakers" documentaries narrate the stories of women from diverse backgrounds who are driving significant climate action. The event, led by the Climate Change Commission, celebrated the resilience of the Filipino spirit and showcased the achievements of women climate leaders. Legarda concluded with a call for continued collaboration and innovation to tackle climate change and secure a resilient future for the Philippines.
